Maths

At Lydeard St Lawrence, our aim is to develop a culture of deep understanding, confidence and competence in maths – a culture that produces strong, secure learning and real progress. We aim to develop children as confident mathematicians who have the ability to apply their learning in context.

We have chosen to follow White Rose Maths.  We use the long-term overviews to guide of planning process and always adapt our planning to suit the needs of the learners in the class.  To ensure the children’s understanding of key mathematical concepts is fully developed we follow a concrete, pictorial and abstract approach to our calculation policy

Children in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 have regular sessions following a scheme called Mastering Number.  This equips children to have secure understanding of number.  Children will be able to confidently recall number facts, spot patterns, subitise effectively and manipulate the composition of number in a variety of situations.

We also recognise the importance of children continuing to develop strong mental maths skills within Key Stage 2.  Children in Key Stage 2 have regular mental maths sessions alongside the daily Maths lesson.  They are supported in this through the use of the online platforms of Times Table Rock Stars.
